Sales Prices for String Quartet Instruments: Classical vs. Modern Violin Making
The world of violin making is a rich and varied universe, where tradition and modernity meet to give birth to instruments of unparalleled sound beauty. When it comes to the string quartet – made up of violin, viola, cello and double bass – prices can vary considerably depending on whether you choose classical or modern violin making.
It should also be noted that the popularity of the instruments plays a role. The violin and cello, which are in high demand, can have higher prices than the viola or double bass.
Prices In the classical field:
Instruments are often made by hand, following ancestral techniques passed down from generation to generation. Each piece is the result of hours of meticulous work, where the luthier selects the finest woods and works them with remarkable precision. Violins from renowned luthiers, for example Stradivarius or Guarnerius, can fetch astronomical sums, sometimes several million euros, due to their history, their rarity and their exceptional sound quality. However, for a well-made classic violin instrument, made by a contemporary luthier, prices can start at a few thousand euros and increase depending on the materials and the reputation of the luthier.
PRICES IN THE modern FIELD:
On the other hand, they encompasses a wider range of techniques and materials. While some modern luthiers retain traditional methods, others innovate, for example using composite materials or integrated amplification techniques. These innovations can influence prices. A modern electric violin, for example, can start at a few hundred dollars for entry-level models and reach several thousand for high-end custom pieces.
